Both Osla and Mab are quick to see the potential in local village spinster Beth, whose shyness conceals a brilliant facility with puzzles, and soon Beth spreads her wings as one of the Park’s few female cryptanalysts. Imperious self-made Mab, product of east-end London poverty, works the legendary codebreaking machines as she conceals old wounds and looks for a socially advantageous husband. Vivacious debutante Osla is the girl who has everything-beauty, wealth, and the dashing Prince Philip of Greece sending her roses-but she burns to prove herself as more than a society girl, and puts her fluent German to use as a translator of decoded enemy secrets. As England prepares to fight the Nazis, three very different women answer the call to mysterious country estate Bletchley Park, where the best minds in Britain train to break German military codes.

In her 2019 poetry collection Feeld, the trans poet and translator Jos Charles pushes the exploration of linguistic malleability in extraordinary ways. Much of the work for a poet is to probe the undercurrents of reality through transformative language, making language malleable as an abstract expression to the abstractness of life. Urgent and vital, feeld composes a new narrative of what it means to live inside a marked body. “gendre is not the tran organe / gendre is yes a hemorage.” “did u kno not a monthe goes bye / a tran i kno doesnt dye.” The world of feeld is our own, but off-kilter, distinctly queer-making visible what was formerly and forcefully hidden: trauma, liberation, strength, and joy. In Charles’s electrifying transliteration of English-Chaucerian in affect, but revolutionary in effect-what is old is made new again. “i care so much abot the whord i cant reed.” In feeld, Charles stakes her claim on the language available to speak about trans experience, reckoning with the narratives that have come before by reclaiming the language of the past. Selected by Fady Joudah as a winner of the 2017 National Poetry Series, Jos Charles’s revolutionary second collection of poetry, feeld, is a lyrical unraveling of the circuitry of gender and speech, defiantly making space for bodies that have been historically denied their own vocabulary. If they are all to survive, they’ll need to reclaim the memories, reclaim their identity-and own who they really are. Yetu will learn more than she ever expected about her own past-and about the future of her people. And so, she flees to the surface escaping the memories, the expectations, and the responsibilities-and discovers a world her people left behind long ago. Yetu remembers for everyone, and the memories, painful and wonderful, traumatic and terrible and miraculous, are destroying her. This demanding role has been bestowed on Yetu. Their past, too traumatic to be remembered regularly is forgotten by everyone, save one-the historian. Yetu holds the memories for her people-water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African slave women thrown overboard by slave owners-who live idyllic lives in the deep. Butler meets Marvel’s Black Panther in The Deep, a story rich with Afrofuturism, folklore, and the power of memory, inspired by the Hugo Award–nominated song “The Deep” from Daveed Diggs’s rap group Clipping. "In that long ago somewhere very near this place he'd watched a falcon fall down the long blue wall of the mountain,"(20). Nights dark beyond darkness and the days more gray each one than what had gone before,"(3). "When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him. The use of these colors encapsulates the loss of development and the devolution of the world in the after effects of disaster. The new world that surrounds them is a dark world full of nothing but murky grey surroundings with no sun to foster the life that managed to live past the desolation. This representation of the world the man had previously known is a stark contrast to the world that surrounds him and the boy at the time the story takes place. Every flashback the man has of his past is in vivid color, full of life and order. Through the man's flashbacks to the past it can be seen that the largest distinction between the Old World and the New World is most present through the use of color. As the story progresses, the world around them becomes increasingly similar to the uncivilized institutions in human history. Through the use of color, snow and the contrast between the man and the boy, each world world unravels the story further showing how the heroes got to the point shown and what's to come in the near future. The novel begins with a contrast between the ideals of the pre-apocalyptic world and the post apocalyptic world. NewFest Pride will showcase nine highly anticipated feature films, including the New York Premiere of the series’ opening night film Fairyland, written and directed by Andrew Durham, produced by Sofia Coppola, and starring Emilia Jones, Scoot McNairy, Geena Davis and Adam Lambert. “We’re excited to honor trailblazers such as Jewelle Gomez and celebrate emerging LGBTQ+ filmmakers such as Aitch Alberto, Julio Torres, Vuk Lungulov-Klotz and Emma Seligman through their authentic and unapologetically queer stories.” “From family dramas to documentaries to absurdist comedies, this year’s line-up includes an expanse of highly anticipated films that capture the varied ways our community expresses pride” said NewFest Director of Programming Nick McCarthy. 'Problemista' Review: Julio Torres' Directorial Debut Starring Tilda Swinton Shows Us How To Become The Problem And The Solution - SXSW I am picky with poetry, but I cannot ignore it when it is a direct mirror of myself looking back at me. I wonder if she is speaking to me directly. With every new page, I wonder if the author somehow has followed me through life and narrated my thoughts and clumsy and awkward conversations. I feel my body and mind are disconnected, except when my worries wage against me and I stay up all night concerned over past transgressions and burden with future bad decisions that have not happened yet. I felt I was reading a reflection of my anxieties and fears. Off the bat, this poetry collection is calling me out. Shelby Leigh is one of my new favorite poets. Especially with this book, I feel like I needed to read it when it got to me. I am so happy that I was one of the chosen few. First, I must thank the author and the publisher for sending me a copy to review. The Transformational Effects of Living from a Place of Surrender Every session will challenge you to go beyond yourself. The intention of this course is to change your entire perspective of life. But most importantly, you will come into touch with the real "you" the indwelling consciousness that is witnessing it all. In this course, you'll learn about your true relationship to the world unfolding around you and to the thoughts and emotions arising within you. We will see that the most effective personal growth technique is to use life to remove your inner blockages, not compensate for them. That unhampered flow is, indeed, the goal of this course. True happiness comes only when your inner energy is free to flow. You end up struggling with life instead of experiencing it. One of the greatest lessons you will learn here is that trying to achieve happiness by getting what you want is actually limiting your happiness. Not just about quieting it down but about how to steadily remove the root cause of its existence. In this course, we will put to rest any questions you have about that inner dialogue. Since its publication in 2007, I've been inundated with questions about why that inner voice is always talking, why so much of what it says is negative and stressful, and most importantly, how you free yourself from it. This is the opening sentence of my book, The Untethered Soul. In case you haven't noticed, you have a mental dialogue going on inside your head that never stops. Jones was born with a rare congenital condition known as sacral agenesis, meaning without a sacrum, the bone that sits at the base of the spine and connects it to the pelvis. This rejection is a defense mechanism hard-won after a lifetime spent pushed (or, later, retreating) to the margins. “Anything of such mass appeal must be…merely facile pleasure,” she writes, “or what British philosopher Bernard Bosanquet called easy beauty.” Recounting a former student’s insistence that Jones must see Beyoncé live in concert, describing it as the moment of a life-changing epiphany, Jones instinctively dismisses the idea that she might experience anything close to profound at an event so obvious, so loud, so broad as a pop concert. About halfway through Pulitzer Prize finalist Chloé Cooper Jones’s transcendent (and highly anticipated) debut memoir, Easy Beauty, she drops the meaning of the title. Teo, a 17-year-old Jade semidios and the trans son of Quetzal, goddess of birds, has never worried about the Trials…or rather, he’s only worried for others.
